A quick word from Orla

What you should know about this coat

Read what she says

Hello there. This coat keeps your dog properly warm in the cold, the wind and the rain. The harness is built in and adjustable, so you don't need a second harness at all. You can just head off.

And it isn't only stitched on top. It runs the whole way round the coat, so it can't tear away from it.

Best of all, it goes on without pulling anything over his head. He puts his own two paws in and you zip it up.

Now, the clocks go back at the end of the month, so we're doing one plus one free until then. Order two, pay for one. Any sizes, any colours. There's only so many in this batch, mind.

Handy, comfortable, and just right for your walks together.

This run, then nothing until spring

Orla draws these up and has them made in small runs, not by the pallet. When the current run is gone the next one isn't cut until after Christmas, and the wet months are now.

Weight is a shortcut. The chest measurement is what decides it. If he is deep chested, a lurcher or a whippet, go one size up. Wrong size when it lands and we swap it, 30 days.

Would you rather measure? Here's how

Put a soft tape around the widest part of his chest, just behind the front legs, snug but not tight. S 36cm, M 40cm, L 44cm, XL 48cm, 2XL 52cm, 3XL 62cm, 4XL 72cm, 5XL 84cm. Between two sizes, take the larger one.

What size does my dog need?

Measure the chest just behind the front legs, snug but not tight. That number decides the size, not the breed. The coat has no stretch, so between two sizes take the larger one. Full guide with breeds and weights further down.

How does the 1 + 1 free work?

Add two coats to your basket and the second one is free, any size, any colour, no code to type. Most people take a second colour, or the next size up if their dog is still filling out.

What if it doesn't fit, or he hates it?

Send it back within 30 days and you get your money back. If it's only the size that's wrong we just swap it. No photos, no forms. Free tracked delivery both ways on the order.

Out in it, every morning

Two paws in
He steps in himself, you zip it
Straight out
Lead clips to the ring on his back
Home dry
Shell sheds the rain, lining keeps him warm

On in seconds, not minutes

Lay it flat, he puts his own two front paws in, you pull it up his back and zip. That is the whole job.

The harness is already sewn into the coat, so the lead clips straight onto the ring and you are out the door. No belly strap to buckle while he twists away from you, nothing to pull over his head.

No-Rip Guarantee

We stand over how this coat is put together, so we back it with a no-rip guarantee. If it tears or gives way through normal wear within 12 months of delivery, we replace it free of charge.

Your dog deserves the best of it, and you deserve to not be thinking about it.

I'll be honest, I only ordered it because I was worn out from the struggle. Barney goes rigid the second a coat comes near him. Two paws in and up it went. No wrestling, no whining. Still can't quite believe it.

I measured her chest like they said and went up a size because she was between the two. Spot on. I was convinced I'd be posting it back.

The ring on the back is the bit I didn't expect. No harness to faff with anymore, just clip the lead and out the door. Saves me a solid five minutes twice a day.

Got caught in the worst of it on the beach road on Sunday. She was mucky to the knees and bone dry underneath. Himself was soaked.

Yesterday

Took the two for the price of one. One on her, one on the radiator. With the weather in this country you'd want the two of them.

Nothing has ever fitted Nell. Deep chest, waist like a wasp. I measured the chest, took the size they told me and it's the first coat she hasn't swum out of.

1 + 1 free offer: add 2 coats to your basket, get 1 coat free

The second coat isn’t a gimmick

It rains on about 150 days a year here. A soaked coat takes a day to dry on the radiator, and the walk still happens tomorrow morning whether it’s dry or not.

That’s why we do 1 + 1 free. One on him, one drying. Different sizes, different colours - mix them however you like. Two dogs in the house? Even easier.

What size suits your four-legged friend?

The measurement that matters: chest girth.

Put a soft tape around the widest part of his chest, just behind the front legs, snug but not tight. Measure him before you order and you will get it right first time.

The coat has no stretch at all, so if he falls between two sizes, take the larger one. Every coat is measured by hand, so allow 1 to 3 cm either way.

Not sure which to take? Send us the chest measurement and we will tell you. We are here to help.

Size chart for the step-in dog coat, S to 5XL, chest girth 36 to 84 cm
Size guide by breed, S to 5XL with example breeds

Ideas and recommendations

Every dog is his own shape, of course. But there are average measurements for each breed that can point you to the right size.

Still in two minds? Send us the chest measurement and we will tell you which one to take.

One more thing. With the 1 + 1 free offer you can take two colours, or two sizes if he is still filling out.

A word from Orla

I’ve a corner of the house with a window and very bad light in the evening. That’s where I work, and that’s where this coat was drawn up.

I’d watched enough people wrestle a coat onto a dog in the car park at the beach to know what the problem was. It’s never the coat. It’s the strap under the belly and the harness you’re meant to post through two little holes while the poor animal twists away from you.

So I took the strap out, put two openings at the front, and sewed the harness straight into it. He puts his own two paws in and you pull it up. That’s the whole idea.

I make these in small runs, so there are never many at a time. If you’re wearing one of mine out on a wet morning, thank you. It means more to me than you’d think.

Before you order

The questions we get most. Anything else, email us and you get a real answer, not a template.

Will it fit my dog?

Measure the chest, just behind the front legs - that's the measurement that matters, not the breed. The size guide above covers everything from a Jack Russell to a Labrador. If you're between two sizes, or if you have a deep-chested dog like a lurcher or a whippet, email us the measurement and we'll tell you which one to take.

My dog hates having coats put on. Will this be any different?

That's usually the belly strap. Most coats make you lift each paw and then buckle something under the belly while the dog twists away. This one opens flat with two leg holes at the front - he steps in, you lift it up his back and zip. Most dogs work it out on the second try.

He's still a pup and growing. What size?

Measure him today and take that size. The coat has no stretch, and a coat bought too big slides sideways when he runs, which is worse than no coat. If he is mid-growth, this is where the 1 + 1 earns its keep: take his size now and the next one up, and you are covered for the winter.

Is it actually waterproof?

The outer shell repels rain and wind - he'll come home dry from a normal walk. It's not a diving suit, so an hour standing in lashing rain will eventually get through, same as your own jacket. The lining keeps him warm either way.

Do I still need a harness?

No. There's a reflective harness stitched into the coat with a D-ring on the back for your lead. That's the whole point - one thing instead of two, and nothing to thread through.

Will the harness hold a dog that pulls?

The straps run the whole way round the coat rather than being stitched onto the outside, so a pull goes into the webbing and not into the fabric. It will not tear away. That said, if your dog really hauls, a dedicated no-pull harness is still the right tool for training. For normal walking this is grand.

Will it rub under his legs?

The leg openings are bound and padded, so there is no raw edge against the skin. If it does rub, it is a size too small, and we will swap it.

How does the 1 + 1 free work?

Add two coats to your basket and the second one is free, any size, any colour, no code to type. Most people take a second colour, or the next size up if their dog is still filling out. The price you see is for the pair.

How do I clean it?

Wipe the muck off with a damp cloth and hang it up. For a proper wash, hand wash cold and let it dry flat. Don't tumble dry it - that's what kills the water-repellent finish.

How long will delivery take, and where does it come from?

Free tracked delivery on every order, no minimum. We pack within 2 working days, then allow 5 to 10 working days in Ireland and 6 to 12 to the UK, so most orders land 9 to 17 days after you order. You get a tracking link by email the moment it leaves us, and a real person on the other end of that email if it goes quiet. If it never turns up, you are refunded.

What if it's not right?

You have 30 days. Email us, send it back, full refund - no photos, no forms. If it's the size that's wrong we'll just swap it.

What are my rights if something goes wrong?

You are covered by the legal guarantee set out in the Irish Consumer Rights Act 2022, on top of our own 30-day money-back promise.

It runs for at least two years from delivery, and for the first 12 months any fault is presumed to have been there when the coat arrived, so you do not have to prove anything. If there is a problem, you get a free repair or a free replacement, and in some cases a price reduction or a full refund.
